Tony Stewart on Danica Patrick: ‘Get off her back and just let her go race and let her learn’; Sorry Tony, that’s not going to happen, nor should it

BROOKLYN, Mich. -- Tony Stewart owns the Cup car that Danica Patrick is racing in Cup this year. So it’s natural to ask him how he thinks she will do in the car, which she is running for the next six weeks.

But Tony is Tony, and he says we should just let her be. Apparently, we’re putting “so much pressure” on her.

Here’s what he said exactly.
“I’ll be honest, I wish everybody would get off her back and just let her go race and let her learn. Everybody is putting so much pressure on her and so much focus on her. Going to a place that you’ve been to is obviously going to help, but everybody needs to take a step back and let this girl learn and do what she is trying to do there. It’s kind of a double edge sword. It’s been great from the publicity side, but for her, I don’t know how she handles it. It’s making me nervous having to talk about her all the time, let alone, she is the one that has to actually do it. I just hope everybody respects her enough to give her the room to know that weather she makes three laps or weather she finishes the whole race the whole goal is to just learn.”

I’m reminded of Mr. Pink in “Reservoir Dogs” – playing the smallest violin in the world with his fingers – and this time the violin plays for Danica.

Come on Tony, she shouldn’t be learning at this point, she should be competing. Stop acting like she’s a victim. She wants to play with the big boys, she’ll have some standards she’s expected to meet. It’s not pressure, it’s reality.

Stewart said he has been advising Danica to some degree, but it’s pretty simple what she needs to do.

“Go out and learn that is exactly what I told her. It’s not been rocket science. The biggest thing is every lap you run in a car the better you’re going to get and the more you are going to learn. Even if you are running fifth or 25th you are learning something. The goal of these 10 races, which is exactly what we said back in the media tour, clear back in January was that these races are designed to give her laps in the car and get her more time and experience. The good thing is she is excited about it and that is the attitude you have to have going into it.”

That’s fine and dandy Tony, but please stop whining and complaining.

It doesn’t look good on you.

You knew when you put Danica in your car that people would be asking about her – and she’s making you plenty of money. So there’s no need to feel nervous because you have to talk about her. That’s just silly.

There are expectations when you are in Cup, and Tony knows that the expectations on her and no higher than they are on anyone else. In fact she probably has lower expectations due to her lack of experience. So if she can’t live up to that, don’t feel sorry for her Tony. It’s a ridiculous thought process that would lead you to think that way.

No news on Newman

Asked about Ryan Newman’s contract, Tony said nothing has been decided yet: “There is nothing different. There is nothing new than what I have told you in the past and as soon as we have something different than what is going on we will be the first to tell you guy.”

Matt, Get a life, Danica has only run a small amount of races. Most of her DNF's where not her fault.
Look back, see how long it took Tony to start winning and having good finishes. Kyle, did not have good finishes when he started. I agree with Tony. The MEDIA should leave her along.
While I'm in the mood, "The Media should leave AJ along, let him sort out his problems by himself.
I get really frausted at ALL MEDIA when I here, repeat and repeat over and over about AJ's problem.
thanks for listening.

Mr. Matt...why is it silly? Yep you're right..lots of $$$ being tossed around...so if I understand what you're saying..the more $$$ a driver brings in or makes for a team...the more press the driver receives? Well isn't that the bottom line for the disconnect fans have with NASCAR and the press? Is their a reason. (other then in your own mind) the press has to write about Danica as opposed to Johanna Long? Does the press receive a kickback for interviewing Danica? I'm
sorry...but to me $$$ aren't the reason I pull for someone. I
have an extremely diverse interest in drivers...some high
$$$...some barely scraping by. Maybe its time the press
connects with the fans and writes about some of the lower
$$$ teams. The same goes for tv coverage..I'd love to see
some more coverage on Ragan Smith. What's happening
with LaBonte, an in-depth view of Kurt Busch's shoestring
team. And some start and park teams...show me what keeps
them going! I have to say there are such high expectations
from alot of folks when it comes to Danica...and I'm not sure
why? How many Cup drivers could go to Open Wheel and
do any better then she's doing? Not many..well Stewart for
sure..So I think he gets the nod when it comes to "knowing
what he's talking about". The press needs to be more
diverse...there are 42 other cars on the track...and they all
have fans. I just get the feeling the press feels like Danica
owes them something...and I'm not sure why that is..????

Tony is a fool, he put her in the race car knowing full well she was a cash cow, did he not expect that people might want some results? The hype and glory that is all Danica is about personality and real race fans are sick of it. She even said herself she gets mad(or upset) when she isn't interviewed, she relishes in the attention, you can't have it both ways. I would love to teams with less money get exposure, I think Johanna Longs story is worth telling. Real race fans want racing not hype. And don't get me going on Jr. Guess selling T-Shirts accounts for talent..sad. Nascar is clueless.

I agree with you Matt, listening to the media gush everytime she breathes is an insult. When DW makes his comments about her they are boardering on having him committed in a strait jacket..all of the others are no better, she does nothing to deflect those insane comments of glory and she infact welcomes them, so they all deserve each other.

Matt,
You are correct. As the press went when she started this sham of a racing career, "Danica can and will win in NASCAR, she just needs some time in the Nationwide series to get used to the fenders". I believe she even said it herself as she recapped her win in the Indy car series that was a fuel mileage race on a foreign track that all of the good guys didn't show up for.

Tony needs to be quiet as he looks like a fool shilling for her, leave that for FOX and Waltrip.

But don't worry, either Big daddy will stop the money flow as they goof that owned it doesn't any longer or she will get knocked up and bow out gracefully, never to be heard from again and all the kings men can find a new type of smoke to blow up our skirts. At least maybe the next one will know how to stand on the gas without hitting everything.
